Today, we’re in Stamford, Lincolnshire, visiting the Stamford Junior Knights. Established in 2019, this basketball club marked a significant achievement in 2023: the unveiling of what many argue is the nation’s first basketball training facility.
A Visit to Stamford Junior Knights’ Basketball Club
Mega Slam Ambassador Coach Maitland had an amazing day in beautiful Stamford, so let’s find out what brought it all together and introduce some excited people that can show you how to build something just like this for yourself, anywhere in the world.
Meet Jordan, Club Manager of Stamford Junior Knights Basketball Training Facility
“Hi I’m Jordan I’m Club manager of Stamford Junior Knights the club started in April 2019 and we opened our own training facility in March 2023 and we started just to give kids the opportunity to play basketball in and around the Stanford area.”
The Origins of a Basketball Club For Community
When asked about the genesis of the basketball community in Stamford, Jordan continued “It all started about four years ago. Adam had played basketball himself and really seen the benefits for his mental health and general fitness. Our boys wanted to get involved with basketball there wasn’t anything for them so I made a flippant remark and said why don’t you go and become a coach so with that within about two weeks he was booked on to do his coaching qualification.
We opened two months later, running out of a local sports Hall, one session 10 children and we quickly grew. Adam always said that it had the possibility to take off in this area and it did, so two years ago we said we’d like to open our own training facility, to offer that dedicated home like other sports have. We set to planning lots of research and we opened in March 2023 and we now coach 120 children per week.”
Basketball for All With A Height Adjustable Hoop
Passionate about inclusivity Stamford hope to cater for everyone, as Adam explained “We want to get walking basketball going. I think everybody should have an opportunity to play basketball. It’s not just a young man’s sport it’s there for everyone and that’s what we want to do here.”
Adam goes on to discuss the benefits of the Mega Slam Hoop at the facility “The last 5 minutes of the session, we run a ‘dunk-off’, just for fun really and because we’ve got the Mega Slam Hoop, we can lower to 5 foot 5 inches, so it’s ideal for little kids. On the other court they only had 10 foot Hoops so we couldn’t do that. Now we’ve got this we can lower it and cater for everyone and that’s the awesome thing about it.”

Bringing An Entire Community Together
Coach Maitland was glad to have made the trip to Stamford “It’s just amazing how one single basketball hoop can bring an entire Community together. There’s a gem here in Stamford and it just goes to show that you can dream, have some grit, some muscle and determination and you can build something like this anywhere you want.”
